Supported Preschools

Shared Success. Diverse Programs. Singular Goal.

The Early Childhood Education Initiative currently supports three different preschool programs, enrolling about 100 children annually. All three programs take collective responsibility for achieving our mission and goals.

Ranked in the Top 2% for Excellence

Early Achievers is Washington state’s Quality Recognition and Improvement System, designed to rate and support high-quality early learning and care. Through this program, the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families ensures families can easily find top-tier education while providing professionals with the resources needed to excel.

Our supported preschools rank in the top 2% of over 6,500 providers participating statewide.

Kaleidoscope

Established in 1991, Kaleidoscope evolved from community-based efforts designed to meet a critical need for local childcare. Operating under the non-profit Orcas Daycare Association, Kaleidoscope currently provides care for children aged 4 weeks to 6 years old. The center's mission is supported by professionally trained and certified employees who utilize diverse, developmentally appropriate learning resources. Kaleidoscope is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, which allows them to serve a crucial role for working families. To further support the health and well-being of its students, the program provides breakfast, lunch, and a snack daily, prioritizing locally sourced and organic food when possible.

Orcas Island Children’s House

Children's House originated, in 1969 as a grassroots effort in the Orcas community. Their core mission is to provide children with the best possible start in life. The program has proudly served children from birth through age six for decades, thanks to the commitment of islanders, teachers, and parents who have cared for this special place. Since 1974, Children’s House has been located on a historic lavender farm and surrounded by a pear orchard, with its main operations housed in a farmhouse built in 1907. Its success is attributed to the hundreds of dedicated volunteers and donors who helped build and maintain the facility, including the adjacent Infant and Toddler Center established in 1997.

Orcas Montessori School

Orcas Montessori School has provided specialized education for Orcas Island children, ages 2 ½ to 6 years, since its founding in 1988. They became a non-profit in 1994. The school utilizes the renowned Montessori method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, which centers on child-focused, individualized learning. Orcas Montessori School classrooms are distinct, featuring mixed-age groupings, uninterrupted independent work periods, and hands-on materials. Orcas Montessori School teachers, also known as Guides, acquire training from the Association Montessori Internationale and Montessori Northwest, ensuring a comprehensive curriculum. Orcas Montessori School was the first Montessori School to participate in the state’s Early Childhood Education Assistance Program (ECEAP), affirming its commitment to broad access.

By offering flexible, family-centered tuition support, the Early Childhood Education Initiative ensures no household has to choose between their child's early learning and their family's stability. Families aren't met with rejection. They're met with hope: "How can we help?" That simple shift tells families they are seen, valued, and supported; helping them stay rooted, hopeful, and thriving.
